'Sababu' got picked from the latest "Wait For Me" album to serve as a promotional single. An excellent choice as it's a beautiful composition. Data and picture got added to the Zita Swoon discography over at the United Mutations Archives.
Folks, the big band is at it again. Another 2 consecutive nights at Iridium in NYC.
THE ED PALERMO BIG BAND
FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, OCTOBER 12+13
We're doing a ton of new stuff I'm sure you'll love.
With NAPOLEON MURPHY BROCK!!
We will be debuting a new arrangement of a beautiful Boz Scaggs tune for Napoleon to sing.
But the night will be, as always, dedicated to the music of FRANK ZAPPA.
Hello Friends and fellow music enthusiasts lurking about,
I hope you don't mind me reaching out to you about some exciting
news. I wanted to share a few things with you about our upcoming Zappa
Plays Zappa tour as well as a new collection of songs from the FOH
series that will be available in time for the tour and for Christmas.
First the tour! We are off to the UK and Europe in November and will
be packing our rocking teenage combo gear carefully so that we can be
sure to give it everything we've got out there on the stage. I am very
excited about the new material we will be playing and the new guitar
sounds I have created. More on the tunes a bit later...
As for the US in December, there are a number of fans we've heard
from over the years who have asked if we could come closer to them so
they don't have to travel as far from their self-described
"geographically challenged" locations. (Incidentally I heard that a lot
from folks in Wales in the UK and we're going there too) We are excited
about the opportunity to come play in some of these legendary locations
for the first time ever. We'll be migratory minstrels hoping to entice
the locals to join us for a great night of music in Fargo ND, Council
Bluffs IA, Boise ID, and Missoula Montana! (complete tour dates can be
found here: http://www.dweezilzappaworld.com/events and http://zappaplayszappa.com/tourdates.html)
Playing "Montana" in Montana will be a surreal moment for us... how about you? Be sure to floss!
I bet you might be asking yourself what else might ZPZ be playing
that will make this tour different from the other tours? Well my answer
to you is, Zappa Plays Zappa will be playing a show that could be best
described as a decades show. We are playing a selection of material from
3 different decades, 60s, 70s, 80s, and we will be premiering some more
new material we have never performed before including an orchestral
piece that I have wanted to play since I started this project in 2006.
Think 200 Motels... Besides that there are a few nice surprises we'll be
throwing in from some of my favorite FZ records.
I always endeavor to balance the show with fan favorites as well as
make room for some of your potential new favorites you might not have
heard yet. I hope to see you out on the road in November and December!
On to new music that will be available! Besides the exciting new
availability of the Frank Zappa catalog we are pleased to announce the
new Zappa Plays Zappa FOH series recording called "Out Of Obscurity". It
features a selection of performances from the February 2011 tour. (For
complete info on the FOH series:
http://www.dweezilzappaworld.com/pages/new-f-o-h-release-coming-very-soon)
Scott Thunes is performing on bass. The majority of the songs were
premiere songs on that tour and many were exclusive to that tour.
The intimate sound of the record almost puts you, the listener, on
stage with us. With a large percentage of songs selected from the first
few Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention records
there is a distinctly different feel to this collection of songs. I'm
pleased to hear the musical growth and development within the band as
well. I hope you enjoy the CD and I look forward to seeing you all out
on tour.
Candy Rock Records is releasing the first two albums by Angel, the U.S. glam rock / hard rock band.
As you probably know, Frank Zappa's 'Punky's Whips' is about Punky Meadows, the lead singer for Angel.
The track got included in the first pressing of Zappa's "Zappa In New York" album, but Warner Brothers decided that it had to be removed. The song got rereleased on Zappa's "Baby Snakes" album, and is, of course, available on the various CD reissues.
1. It is Moon's Birthday today! And this morning I was lucky enough
to have a cold breakfast with Moon and Mathilda - Ice Cream Cake and
the sun wasn't even up yet. Yay!
2. I know I do not have to remind you that next December 2013 is the
40th Anniversary of the Roxy Performances. Now that we have thoroughly
identified all it's parts and participles, we will deliver The Movie
without further incident and maybe only a little ado. In theatres, DVD
and Blue-ray, sometime before December, 2013.
3. MEANWHILE . . . before this December 2012, in anticipation
of The ACTUAL Movie, we are pleased to inform you that we are
scheduling the release of the PREQUEL to the actual Soundtrack. Yes. You will! Appreciate the raw unbridledness of the 75 minutes and 49 seconds of Roxy without the Elsewhere. Further details on The Movie and P.S. (Prequel Soundtrack) as soon as the duckies are all lined up.
4. Oh, and did I mention a new series is about to launch - Road
Tapes - on Vaulternative Records! We've taken direct aim at Halloween!
the residents: talking light - live at bimbo's 365 club (2011, 2cdr, usa, ralph records 1104)
Early 2011, The Residents did a sort of kickstarter project to finance a 3D shooting of the "Talking Light" concert that they would be doing at 'Bimbo's' in San Francisco. This 2CDR album, an audio capture of the show, was produced in a very limited edition and was given to the donors of this video shoot project. Pretty rare stuff. Here's a fragment:
Belgian writer, poet, stand-up comedian, performer and comic book artist Vitalski is / was a part of Circus Bulderdrang, a theater company that combined music and theater. This CDR compilation album got released around 1995 and offers some fine music and some spoken word scenes from the other side of the fence. You do have to understand Flemish to fully enjoy this, but as I like it a lot, I'm happy to share it with you.
The German Enja label released this beautiful Sun Ra tribute album earlier this year. From the first notes, the album grabs your attention. This disc is a must-have for fellow Saturnians, but as both the choice of compositions and the performance are excellent, it may serve as a perfect introduction for those who want to check out the music of Sun Ra as well. The album opens with a couple of classics: 'Ancient Aiethopia', 'A Call For Demons' and 'Watusa', and continues with two original compositions: 'Do To Voodoo' by Kathrin Lernke, and 'Hypertorus' by Nikolaus Neuser. Both pieces are excellent. Next up are Sun Ra's 'Images', 'Future' and 'Galactic Voyage', and the album ends with Gerswhin's 'S'Wonderful'.
1. LINGUA FRANKA PART VIII / Arjun von CAEMMERER 2. THE POVERTY OF
COMPLETISM / Mimi GABIN-KHAN 3. WATERMELON IN EASTER HEY / Madge

Composer and french horn player John Clark released his first album as a
band leader in 1980 : "Song Of Light". It must have been quite a revelation as
he probably was one of the first to use the french horn in a classic jazz setting: french horn, piano, bass and
drums.
John Clark self-produced the record stating that he could make all the
mistakes himself, instead of having someone else make them, which is quite an
understatement as "Song Of Light" is a beautiful album. I love the compositions,
and the playing and the improvisations are superb. It's great to hear a french
horn outside the classical environment.
"Song Of Light" presents seven compositions and each and every one of them is great.
The title song is an uptempo track that sounds like it has three french horn players (love those overdubs !); 'Introduction' walks the funky road and has some nice key-changes; 'The Answer / Island Flower' is a slower piece. It has spun-out melody lines. Soundscape soundtrack; 'Trevor's Dance' and 'Glimpse Of Freedom Part 2' take us back to the jazz corner. Great and catchy tunes, showing the talents of the quartet. 'Belle's Ballad' just might be my favorite piece on "Song Of Light". A beautiful ballad. The album ends with 'Sandy', another fine composition, with some great soloing by Michael Cochrane on piano and by Ron McClure on bass.
The Composers Concordance label recently re-released "Song Of Light" on CD.
The album got remixed and got a new cover. It's a gem.
If you're into groovy jazz, you should definitely check out "Song Of
Light".
Jack Bruce found international fame as the bass player for Cream.
With Eric Clapton & Ginger Baker.
I do have to say, howeer, that the only album that I have that features Jack Bruce is Zappa's "Apostrophe (')". And that's just on one track.
Jack Bruce met, and jammed, with Frank Zappa due to mutual friend Jim Gordon.
The jam took place in September, 1972, at Electric Ladyland Studios, NYC with Frank
Zappa, Jack Bruce, Tony Duran (rhythm guitar), and Jim Gordon (drums). The result of this
jam can be found on the title song on Apostrophe ('). Forty years later, Jack Bruce is still playing and recording. His latest album is called "Jack Bruce & His Big Blues Band : Live 2012" and it's a 2CD set.
the residents present a charles bobuck contraption: postcards from patmos (2012, cdr, usa, rz0808)
This week's new Residents album is called "Postcards From Patmos".
"This music was used as pre-show music for The Bunny Boy tour. It is taken from the music that was used in creating the score for The Residents' BUNNY BOY video internet series in 2008. The music is darkly abstract. Charles Bobuck, composer for The Residents, indulges himself in sonic dissonance, in the very best of ways."
CDR-on-demand. It looks great and sounds even better.
The Heliocentric Counterblast octet, featuring German trumpet player Nikolaus Neuser and alto sax player Kathrin Lemke, pay tribute to the late Sun Ra.
Can't tell you much more for the moment, but I'll get back to this album soon...
Frank Zappa explains on one of his albums that he had met Johnny Cash earlier that day, and that Johnny would be playing a song with the band. Unfortunately, Johnny's wife got sick so he couldn't make it, but the band did play 'Ring Of Fire'.
You probably know the story better than I do.
All this as an intro to tell you that there's an album out that collects twenty different artists performing Ring Of Fire. Including Zappa's Best Band version.

Apparently, yesterday, Gail Zappa said that the announcement for the Roxy DVD will be made later this month. Somehow, with all the fuzz that has been made the last couple of years, this DVD has grown to almost mythical proportions...
There's not much more that I can add to this.
Every now and then, the Saturn label re-releases an old Sun Ra album.
This time, it's Sun Ra & His Blue Universe Arkestra's "Universe In Blue".
Exact reproduction of the 1972 album on 180 g vinyl.
As far as I know, this album has never been issue on CD.

conversation with Pierre Boulez in his office at IRCAM in Paris about, among
other things, the freedom of expression in serial music, Frank Zappa, John Cage,
control and chance, the theater, his work as composer and conductor, of
curiosity and talent, and his childhood. Dimitri Vassilakis , one of the few
pianists of worldwide reputation, provides the interpretation for this
document."

Hello
and a quick note to inform you.......Project/Object is back on the road next
week!!
Yes
indeed....Humor Does Belong In Music...we all need a laugh or two in these
times...
Hope to
see you on our Fall Northeast Tour (Sorry west coast , southeast, midwest..just
a quick one (while we're away!)
We're proud to be bring along once again......from the
1978- 1988 Zappa Tour and albums .....
Ike Willis & Ray White !!!
We also
want to thank YOU again for making us the LONGEST running, internationally
touring band playing Zappa's music, outside of the man himself!
We look forward to another fantastic time
with Ike Willis and Ray White, who together and separately toured and recorded
with Zappa from 1976-1988. Our desire is to bring you, Zappa fans...your
favorite alumni as often as possible.
We're
also very proud that still, Project/Object is unique amongst Zappa tribute
bands: we celebrate EVERY era of Zappa's music, not just selected periods.
Ike
Willis held the longest tenure of any of Zappa's lead vocalists. His career
with Frank began in the role of "Joe" on the Zappa masterpiece Joe's
Garage, and he continued to record and tour with Zappa, appearing on almost
every Zappa tour and album after 1978, playing an integral role in Frank's
final tour in 1988. The 1988 tour is considered to be Zappa's most historic and
one that he richly represented to his fan base in several live recordings.
Ray
White joined Zappa's band in the fall of 1976, on guitar and vocals. Ray and
Ike formed a memorable vocal harmony partnership on later tours. Ray also
participated on the albums Zappa in New York, Tinsel Town Rebellion, You Are
What You Is, and several others with Ike Willis.
These
Project/Object shows will celebrate the legendary tour, live album and DVD that
Ray and Ike were such a huge part of: "DOES HUMOR BELONG IN MUSIC ?".
We say
"Yes it certainly does!!"
Frank
Zappa is increasingly being seen as one of the 20th Century's most important
composers. His effect on the modern music landscape is undeniable. For over
TWENTY YEARS, It's been our mission in Project/Object to bring this music to
our amazing, supportive and FELLOW Zappa fans, as well as eager new ears
As we
hit this milestone year -- we are proud to say we are still ALONE amongst the
various Zappa Tribute bands in that we've performed over the past 20 yrs with
at least fifteen of Zappa's legendary alumni. I
On this
tour Ike and Ray will add their incredible voices and guitar playing to the
mix, delighting fans yet again with a diverse setlist, including a special
focus on the 1984 Tour.
NEWS
FLASH.....!! DRUMMER GREGG BENDIAN ONBOARD FOR THIS TOUR!!
This
tour also marks the first time Project/Object will tour with a close friend and
previous P/O guest - composer and drummer/percussionist Gregg Bendian.
Gregg
is well known as a boundary crossing music conceptualist and composer. He's
released many highly regarded solo albums, and leads his own repertory group
"The Mahavishnu Project" who perform, of course, the music of
McLaughlin in the classic Mahavishnu years.
Gregg
has recorded and toured with many incredible artists including Nels Cline,
Derek Bailey, and The Musical Box, the well know Genesis Tribute. In the
difficult to label, but modern jazz world he's worked and recorded with John
Zorn, Mark Ribot, William Parker, Cecil Taylor & Pat Metheny.
Recently
(spring & summer 2012), Gregg has performed a number of concerts in Todd
Rundgren's band, and at his summer camp. A longtime Zappa fanatic, he will
bring his unique touch and diverse percussive precision to the bandstand. Yet
another connection to Zappa is Gregg's work with Beefheart guitarists Zoot Horn
Rollo and Gary Lucas.

Belgian avant-garde artist and blues legend Jos Steen passed away earlier this month.
Jos was inspired by the early Mississippi Delta Blues artists, and the timbre of his vocals placed him very close to Don Van Vliet.
If my memory serves me right, he once had a band called The China Pig Blues Band, and he recorded a session with Steven De Bruyn and Jimmy Carl Black for the belgian Cucamonga radio show.
The below fragments show one of the rare performances of Jos Steen. The first snippet has Jos playing the vacuum cleaner, the second one features Jos on the guitar.
Friday October 26 and Saturday October 27, Drammen (a little town in Norway) will be hosting the ZappaUnion Festival, a festival where bands will be performing the music of Frank Zappa.
Former Zappa keyboard & horn player, and vocalist Robert Martin will be a guest !
Fredrik Ljungkvist (sax), Magnus Broo (trumpet), Håvard Wiik
(piano), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (double bass) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) are ATOMIC.
The band will be performing at one of my favourite clubs: 'De Singer' in Rijkevorsel, Belgium.
