PAUL BUFF PRESENTS... VOLUME 10

The exceptional & archival PAL Studio journey continues with volume 10 of the "Paul Buff Presents..." series.

Greg Russo adds:

"Volume 10 features Zappa providing background vocals on an unreleased track by Johnny Barakat And The Vestells ("Jezebel"), along with Baby Ray And The Ferns' "The World's Greatest Sinner" and Zappa's engineering of The Tornadoes' "Moon Dawg." Note that this was 25 years before "Jezebel Boy"! "

PAUL BUFF PRESENTS... VOLUME 9

Crossfire is back, and this time it's with Volume 9 of the "Paul Buff Presents..." series, collecting all the recordings that Paul Buff did in his PAL studio in Cucamonga in the early sixties.

FZ content in Volume 9 include his production with Dave Aerni of the previously unissued Rhythm Surfers track "Steel Wheels" (its debut release was two weeks ago on the Dave Aerni collection), and Frank's engineering of The Tornadoes' "The Tornado."

Download-only album:

THE MASTERS - SINGLES & RARITIES

"The Masters started out as Paul Buff, lead guitarist Ronnie Williams and rhythm guitarist Johnny Fisher. After releasing the single "T Bone"/ "Sunday Blues," The Masters were just Buff and Williams on multi-tracked parts. The only exception was "Breaktime," a mid-1961 track that was co-written by Paul Buff, Ronnie Williams and guitarist Frank Zappa, a friend of Ronnie Williams who first came to Pal Studios in late 1960. As nearly all Zappa fans know, "Breaktime" was his first released recording."

The "Singles & Rarities" compilation collects 32 tracks: the three original EMMY singles, plus 26 previously unreleased recordings of demos, outtakes and alternate mixes.

Released as a download-only album by Crossfire Publications.

"The third issue of The Rondo Hatton Report continues to reflect the interest that this organ excites around the globe, featuring not only a first contribution from (the?) Indian of the group, but also an essay from the man behind that indispensible tool for true obsessives, the superlative Information Is Not Knowledge website. Fans of the statistical density that Google makes available will doubtless be thrilled to learn that The Rondo Hatton Report is now read in 35 different countries and accessed by 28 different language groups. As previously advertised, we still aim to encourage submissions from each and every ambient domain, and hope to sweep the entire planet shortly. We are committed to publishing texts in languages other than English, so there continues to be no reason why you or your loved ones should suffer as you hesitate to express yourself outside of ‘your’ language. SUN RA - COLLEGE TOUR VOL.I

May 1966, Sun Ra and his Arkestra did a tour of five New York colleges. Part of the 1966/05/18 concert found its way to the "Nothing Is.." album, released in 1970.

As Russ Musto explains in the liner notes of "College Tour Vol.I", this was a full year before Jimi Hendrix released his "Are You Experienced" album; one year before The Beatles did "Sergeant Pepper's".
The Mothers Of Invention had just recorded their "Freak Out" album. It wasn't even out yet. No wonder that Frank Zappa decided to move the band to NYC little after that.

Sun Ra and his Arkestra were defining new boundaries, pushing the limits.
On "College Tour", the band performs some superb Sun Ra compositions and Arkestra members John Gilmore, Marshall Allen and Pat Patrick show why most Saturnians consider this line-up as their favourite.

"College Tour Vol.I" presents the soundcheck, the first set, and a part of the second set of the 1966/05/18 concert.
As the "Nothing Is..." album was taken from the first set of this concert, the entire 40 minutes of the LP are included in "College Tour Vol.I". So should we consider this album as a re-release of "Nothing Is..."? Not really, as "College Tour" clocks at almost 140 minutes !!

In my list, "College Tour Vol.I" is the perfect introduction to Sun Ra.
If you're not familiar with the music of Sun Ra, get your hands on this one.
If you already know "Nothing Is...", you know that you will need "College Tour" as well.

Great show(s),
great artwork,
Essential listening!

BUMBLEFOOT - 9.11

Bumblefoot (= Ron Thal) released "9.11" in 2001.

"9.11" was, and still is, an exceptional album.

Originally meant to be titled "Guitars Suck", the album got renamed after the September 11 tragedies. Even more important, all the profits of the album went to the American Red Cross.

And behind this philantropic gesture, there's the music.
This is food for guitar freaks. Ron Thal is a fine guitar player and songwriter, and for this album he surrounded himself with some top notch musicians:
Matthias Eklundh gets a solo guest spot in 'Bandwagon', a tune that would fit perfectly for a 60s television series. Superb!!
And Dweezil Zappa gets to unleash his guitar chops in 'Top Of The World', a first-rate tearjerker with a ripping guitar solo...

Yep. Right up my alley: different styles, funny, and some amazing guitar stuff.
Who cares that Ron Thal is playing with Guns n Roses...
This is Bumblefoot and this is great.

RUFUS HARLEY - BAGPIPES OF THE WORLD

Last year, Transparency released this fine tribute to the late Rufus Harley.
"Bagpipes Of The World" is a 3-CD set that features a concert by the Rufus Harley Quartet, his last radio interview, 5 tracks by America Patton Harley (Rufus' son), and a concert by Rufus Harley and Messiah Patton Harley (one of his other sons), live in Jamaica.

"Bagpipes Of The World" takes a look at the music and the life of Rufus Harley. Rufus was a fine musician, and a man with a mission.
"Bagpipes Of The World" is an excellent tribute.
Beautiful.

NEW ZAPPA BOOTLEG: LET'S HEAR IT... 50-50 SPLIT WAX

The Hoffman bootleg label did it again. "Let's Hear It For Mr. Green Genes" is a brand-new vinyl bootleg, produced in a limited edition of 250 copies and in various vinyl colours...

The album has the 1968/04/28 recording from The Grande Ballroom in Detroit, but as I was told the other day: "you don't actually play vinyl bootlegs. you collect them."

Here's the 50-50 split wax one.
Front insert on high-quality paper & comes with extra inserts & postcards.
As you can imagine, even this 50-50 split wax one, exists in different editions...

SUN RA - CLUB LINGERIE

The Transparency label started releasing Sun Ra material in 2005. After a couple of DVDs, the label continued with two albums in the Sun Ra Audio Series, the second one of which was "Live At Club Lingerie".

The date is December 14, 1985, and it's Sun Ra and the Jet Set Omniverse Arkestra that are performing at the 'Club Lingerie' in Hollywood, CA.
As usual the setlist is a mix of unknown pieces and some classic Sun Ra material.

I never actually saw Sun Ra in concert, but I was fortunate to catch the Arkestra with Marshall Allen six nights in a row in Tilburg a couple of years ago. What I hear on "Club Lingerie" exactly is the atmosphere that I experienced in Tilburg.

A great set. A fine audience recording.

If you're not familiar with the music of Sun Ra, this could be the perfect introduction.

AMK - THE LONESOME ECHO

Talking about the Transparency label, here's AMK's "The Lonesome Echo".
AMK is an american experimental musician who puzzles sounds into compositions. On "The Lonesome Echo" he used records, turntables, flexi discs and field recordings.

AMK builds his soundscapes by means of repetition of samples and sounds, on top of which he puts other sounds.
You won't hear this on your local radio station...

RUFUS HARLEY - RE-CREATION OF THE GODS

Wiki says:

"Rufus Harley, Jr. (b. near Raleigh, North Carolina, May 20, 1936; d. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 31, 2006) was an American jazz musician of mixed Cherokee and African ancestry, known primarily as the first jazz musician to adopt the Scottish great Highland bagpipe as his primary instrument."

At young age, Rufus Harley studied saxophone, flute, trumpet, oboe and clarinet.
After seeing a scottish battalion playing the bagpipes at John F. Kennedy's funeral, he switched to the bagpipes.

Rufus Harley released "Bagpipe Blues" in 1966 and he continued to release approximately one album a year until 1972.
It's the 1972 album "Re-Creation Of The Gods" that got re-released on CD in 2006.

Impressive stuff.
At first, scottish bagpipes against jazzy keyboards and a double bass do make your eyebrows move, but when you keep on listening, you're in for a treat.
The thing about bagpipes is that once that you've started playing, the notes have to keep on coming. It's not like you can play short phrases, or that you have to catch your breath every once in a while. The notes just keep on coming.

If you're in for new sounds, might I suggest to try some Rufus Harley...

ZAPPA'S 1976 SNL BAND

December 1976, Zappa performed at the Saturday Night Live tv show with his band.

Checking out the footage, Javier found out that the Zappa band guested two musicians from the Saturday Night Live house band:

Cheryl Hardwick on keyboards (who later wrote music for the Muppet Show)
Bob Cranshaw on bass.

Both now have an entry at the United Mutations archives, 'though I could use a bit of extra info...

PIERRE VERVLOESEM - SKETCHES OF PAIN

Earlier this month, Pierre Vervloesem's C.A.C.A. project did a gig in Antwerp. Remember the nice flyer?
Anyway, couldn't be there as my son has to study for school (which means that I had (and have) to be around the house).

So I went back to the C.A.C.A. bandcamp link to play some of the tracks again, and I noticed that one can link the player in a blog...

SUN RA - THE ROAD TO DESTINY

Earlier this year, volume six of the Sun Ra "Lost Reel Collection" got released by the Transparency label.
Entitled "The Road To Destiny", the album takes us to the 'Gibus' club in Paris, France, in 1973.

It took a while for the album to arrive, but I'm sure glad it did. The 50-minute recording opens with 'Astro Black', goes into an excellent 'Discipline 27' (with a spacy vibes (?) solo), takes us to a lengthy Sun Ra recitation, and ends with 'Prepare For The Journey To Other Worlds / Swing Low Sweet Chariot / Why Go To The Moon'.

The sound of the recording is a bit distorted at times, especially in the vocal section, and that's a pity because this is an excellent show.
Not the best sound quality, but I enjoyed it.

BILL DIXON DIES AT 84

June 16, 2010 — American free jazz/avant-garde trumpeter Bill Dixon died last night (June 15) in his sleep. He was 84.

Along with the trumpet, Dixon, born in 1925, also played the flugelhorn and piano, and was highly respected in the free jazz scene. His musical history is long and storied: back in 1961 to 1963 he played with saxophonist Archie Shepp; in 1964 Dixon presented a concert series called The October Revolution in Jazz, with musicians such as Sun Ra and Paul Bley. Dixon is also known for organizing the Jazz Composer's Guild, who supported jazz independent of clubs or agents.

Dixon also left his mark in academia, teaching at Bennington College from 1968 to 1995, where he formed the Black Music Division in 1973. In 1986, he published a book, L'Opéra: A Collection of Letters, Writings, Musical Scores, Drawings and Photographs.

SUN RA - LIVE IN ROME

Today, I enjoyed Sun Ra's "Live In Rome", the latest Transparency release.
"Live In Rome" takes us back to 1980. Back to the Teatro Giulio Cesare in Rome, Italy, where Sun Ra and his Arkestra performed on March the 28th.

Floating soundscapes, Arkestra freak-outs, Sun Ra classics, and keyboard madness, the omnipresent June Tyson... It's all part of "Live In Rome".

ZAPPANALE WINS LAWSUIT AGAINST ZFT

Actually, it was the ZFT who filed a complaint against the Arf Society for using the name "Zappa".
And, yesterday, the complaint got rejected by the German court.

Hip hip hooray, congrats to the Arf Society and long live Zappanale.

ALESSANDRA CELLETTI - PLAYS BALDASSARRE GALUPPI

Now here's a nice surprise.
Last year, Transparency, the U.S. label that is best known for its excellent Sun Ra series, released an album by italian pianist (and composer) Alessandra Celletti.
Alessandra Celletti is known for her interpretations of works of Sati and of Philip Glass, but she has also released a couple of albums of original compositions.

On "Alessandra Celletti Plays Baldassarre Galuppi", Alessandra performs the works of 18th century composer Galuppi on the grand piano.
I have to admit that I was a bit reserved as 18th century music can not be heard that often at the United Mutations headquarters, but I'm always in for trying something different...
And I was pleasantly surprised.

Playful, joyful, and very intense at the same time.
I like it.

Check out Alessandra Celletti at MySpace:

And here are a couple of samples from the album:

STEVE VAI FESTIVAL

October 22 and 23, the Oosterpoort will be hosting the Steve Vai Festival. (The Oosterpoort is a concert hall in Groningen in The Netherlands.)

Steve Vai will be performing with the Noord Nederlands Orkest (NNO).
They will be performing a 40-minute symphony that Steve Vai wrote, as well as five new pieces.

Rumour has it that Mike Keneally will also be participating.

The show on the 22nd is entitled "New Compositions For Guitar And Orchestra", whereas the show on the 23nd is called "The Middle Of Everywhere".

HEAVEN AND - BYE AND BYE I'M GOING TO SEE THE KING

"Bye And Bye I'm Going To See The King" is the second Heaven And album. It caught my eye as Ali N. Askin guests on piano.

The album arrived in my mailbox a couple of days ago and made quite an impression. Heaven And plays instrumental, experimental rock, flavoured with classical elements and with jazz.

Heaven And has Tony Buck on drums, Martin Siewert on guitar and electronics, Zeitblom on bass, and Steve Heather on percussion.

"Bye And Bye..." presents six tracks. All of these tracks (except one) are seven minutes plus. It's all about soundscapes: searching and giving room at the same time. The result is a very powerful soundtrack for a fantastic journey.

I love it.

Recommended listening !!

VARIOUS ARTISTS - DAVE AERNI PRESENTS...

In the early sixties, Dave Aerni worked with Paul Buff, Frank Zappa and with Ray Collins in Paul Buff's PAL Studio in Cucamonga.
At the time, Dave Aerni worked as a musician, producer and even as a manager (for surf band The Tornadoes).

Crossfire Publications has collected these early recordings on this album. As you can imagine, it has both Frank Zappa and Paul Buff on a number of tracks.
Again, excellent liner-notes were written by Greg Russo.

Greg adds:
"The Dave Aerni collection includes tracks by The Tornadoes (some engineered by FZ), The Pharos, both sides of the Ron Roman single ("Tell Me"/ "Love Of My Life"), three tracks by The Rhythm Surfers produced by Zappa and Aerni, both sides of Zappa/Aerni-produced singles by Conrad And The Hurricane Strings and The Cordells, The Torquays, Arty & The Supremes, Ray Holland & The Lilly Cups and four tracks by Dave Aerni's 1966 group City Limits."

Of historical value!

VARIOUS ARTISTS - MARKUS DETMER PLAYS STAUBGOLD

DJ and musician Markus Detmer founded the Staubgold label in 1998. We're a bit over ten years later now, and Staubgold is celebrating its 100th release.
For the occasion, Markus Detmer mixed his favourite tracks from the label into one album.

"Markus Detmer Plays Staubgold - 100 Jahre Einsamkeit" (one hundred years of loneliness) is a collection of psychedelic dance tracks, electronic pieces, experimental music, exotica, and more.

An excellent introduction to an impressive label.

TODD RUNDGREN - HELLO IT'S ME AND MY FRIENDS

Todd Rundgren's "Hello, It's Me And My Friends" features Dweezil Zappa as a guest. Dweezil plays the guitar on one track 'Time Heals'.
But don't let them fool you. This album is a re-release of the 2002 album "Todd Rundgren & His Friends". Plus four bonus tracks, yes, but it's a re-titled re-release.

PHIL ALVIN - UN SUNG STORIES

Phil Alvin, frontman of The Blasters, released his first solo album in 1986. The album was entitled "Un Sung Stories" and featured The Dirty Dozen Brass Band as well as Sun Ra and his Arkestra as special guest.
Sun Ra & his Arkestra can be heard on three tracks!!

On the Saturn Newsgroup ihor added:

"i came across this phil alvin album 'unsung stories' at
http://twilightzone-rideyourpony.blogspot.com/2010/04/phil-alvin-unsung-stories-1986.html
which also has a link to a 128 kbps mp3 of the album. of interest to
me was the appearance of sun ra and the arkestra on three tunes,
doubly so because phil alvin and sun ra and the arkestra were doing
two cab calloway tunes - 'the ballad of smoky joe' and 'the old man of
the mountain' - and 'brother can you spare a dime'. being a bit
familiar with the cab calloway songs, i was wondering how they were
going to do these - would they out-'hi-de-ho' calloway, or miss the
mark, or what..."

RALPHAMERICA CLOSES DOWN

a message from Ralphamerica

Hello Ralph Pals,
today we have an announcement for you...

As of August 15, Ralph America will be closing due to the general state of
the music business and the expanding cost of creating physical products.
It's been a great ride. Thanks for all your support over the past 11
years.

Lorrie and Dren

Over the next few weeks you will see things disappear from the site...and
once they gone, they gone!

That's the long and short of it. It's been a joy getting to know many of
you over the years. I think we will have many of your addresses etched
into memory for years to come from sending so many packages to you.

So pick up those last few goodies before it's too late!

DWEEZIL ZAPPA 2010 06 06

the Dweezil Zappa newsletter:

Hello Everyone,
It's summer time again and that means the we have our bags packed and we're heading out to play more of the world's finest optional entertainment for all of you who are interested.

What can you expect from us this time around? A lot of new material and visits to a few great new cities around the world.

We have added an additional keyboardist once again. His name is Chris Norton. He sings well too. We've learned several new songs that we've never played on tour and we've brought back a few we haven't played in a while.

Here are just a few of the new ones. Pick Me I'm Clean, The Blue Light, Big Swifty, Easy Meat, Blessed Relief, The Little House I Used To Live In.

To find a show near you please visit :

or http://zappaplayszappa.com/tourdates.html

I have also made improvements to my guitar equipment. I'm quite inspired by the detailed sounds I'm currently able to produce with it. To hear a few recent audio examples from the road visit:
http://www.dweezilzappaworld.com/songs/category/fractal-experiments

We also have a new audio release. Dweezil Zappa - Return Of The Son Of...

It's a double CD set with live performances from 2008 - 09. It's available for pre-order in North America right now, here's the link :
http://www.musicspace.com/redir.aspx?ciid=47730&url=/product.aspx%3Fproductcode=MS3102%26ciid=47730

It will be available in stores worldwide in July. For a quick listen to all of the tracks on the CDs please visit :

The final thing I'd like to mention is Dweezilla. What is it? It's a 4 day music bootcamp taking place June 21st through the 24th in the Catskills. All of the ZPZ band members will be teaching workshops. There are also private lessons available. There are still a few spaces left! For more info about Dweezilla visit:

I look forward to seeing all of you out there on the road!

Thanks, DZ

COPERNICUS - NOTHING EXISTS

"Nothing Exists" was originally released in 1985. It presented performance poet Corpernicus (real name Joseph Smalkowski) using psychedelic music and free jazz to accompany his readings.
The band started in 1978 in New York City with Copernicus, Larry Kirwan and Pierce Turner.
Kirwan (on electric guitar, keyboards and vocals) and Turner (keyboards and vocals) are the musical masterminds, adding to the vocals that are spontaneously created by Copernicus.

"Nothing Exists" was Copernicus' first album. It combines complex music with Copernicus' extraordinary view on the quantum world.

And it looks like Copernicus found a good home at MoonJune Records.
MoonJune released "Disappearance" last year, and continues now with a re-released of "Nothing Exists.

Very impressive. Check it out.
