JOHN LITTON BAROÏ AND PIERRE VERVLOESEM - ZALA ZALA

A bit over ten years ago, the Brussels-based Carbon 7 label released an album by John Litton Baroï.
John Litton Baroï was born in Bangladesh but lived in Brussels at the time. I don't have a clue where he lives nowadays. He might still live in Brussels. I don't have a clue.
"Zala Zala" featured Pierre Vervloesem who played a lot of freaky guitar, who also arranged all of Baroï's songs and who produced the disc. Besides John Litton Baroï and Pierre Vervloesem (who also played the bass), the album also featured Sandip Bhattacharva on tablas, Peter Vandenberghe on keyboards, and Didier Fontaine on very powerful, machine-like drumming.

Pierre Vervloesem's influence is very present. Presenting this album as a Baroï / Vervloesem collaboration was the least that they could do.

Picture and data have been added to the United Mutations Archives.

JIMMY HERRING & ZOOT ALLURES

MORAINE - METAMORPHIC ROCK

When the Moonjune Records released Moraine's "Manifest Density" in 2009, I was quite impressed.
We're 2011 now, and Moraine is back with "Metamorphic Rock", another excellent album.

Moraine plays fusionlike, instrumental progressive rock with a dash of world and eastern flavours.
Compared to their first release, the colour of their sound has changed a little bit, and the line-up did slightly change as well. Dennis Rea on guitar, Kevin Millard on bass & NS/stick, Alicia DeJoie on violin, James DeJoie on sax and flute and Stephen Cavit on drums and percussion.

The album was recorded live in concert at the 2010 edition of NEARfest. The sound is great and the performance is excellent. It's hard to believe that this was recorded live. The band plays very tight, very powerfull.

NEARfest, is one of the biggest festivals for progressive rock music fans. I'm pretty sure that Moraine made quite an impression. 2012 will see the last edition of NEARfest, byt the way, which is a shame as many great bands have performed there.

Moraine has a very unique and recognisable sound and "Metamorphic Rock" gives a perfect description of what you will get. Just listen to the below clip, and you'll immeditately hear what I mean.
Recommended !

Here's 'Save The Yuppie Breeding Grounds' from the very same NEARfest concert. The track could be already be found on "Manifest Density" and is now available on "Metamorphic Rock" in a live version.

THE RESIDENTS - COOCHIE BRAKE SPECIAL EDITION

  • the residents: couchie brake special edition
    (2011, 2cd, usa, ralph rz1110)

The Residents released "Couchie Brake - Special Edition" only a couple of weeks ago. This is the so-called special edition because it's a two CD set. The regular (single CD album) will be out next february.
There are two remarkable things about this album: one: it features Chuck, Bob and Carlos (plus special guests Nolan Cook and M.Villalobos), and second: it's not only subtitled "Sonidos De La Noche", but the story is told in Spanish, which adds some sort of other dimension...

I do like it, but I had not expected this.

The horrible thing about this release, however, is that it's a limited edition of 444 copies that is completely being sold through ebay. I don't like that. I like to buy my albums in a regular shop.

I wasn't too happy when I found out that The Residents were selling some of their new albums only at their shows. They didn't tour Yurrip, so how are we Yurripean fans going to get a copy? And now things are even getting worse with this ebay mess.
I don't like where this is going.

ZAPPA THE HARD WAY GETS PAPERBACK EDITION

"Zappa The Hard Way", Andrew Greenaway's essential book on the what and why of Frank Zappa's 1988 tour, has been made available as a paperback.

FZ's 1988 tour not only was Zappa's final tour, it also was an exceptional tour musicwise. Superb horn arrangements of classic Zappa tunes; fun with Beatles songs, and much, much more.
The book made me go back to a couple of Zappa albums (and concert recordings) that I hadn't listened to in a while.

Featuring new interviews with the surviving band members, a Foreword by Frank’s sister Candy, and an Afterword by his former secretary, Pauline Butcher (who interviewed Frank during the tour) - this is a must-read not only for Zappa fans but for anyone with an interest in playground psychology.

The book can be purchased from:

Andrew adds:

'NEW' SUN RA 7" ON NORTON RECORDS

Originally issued in 1955, this rare doo-wop single now gets a re-release on Norton Records.
Norton already released a similar 7" two years ago with "I Am Strange / I Am An Instrument".
Vinyl isn't dead !!

ALESSANDRA CELLETTI - CRAZY GIRL BLUE

Italian pianist Alessandra Celletti has a new album out. "Crazy Girl Blue" is a collection of solo piano pieces.
As the album cover, the album title, and the titles of the various compositions suggest, "Crazy Girl Blue" invites you to an intimate world, Alessandra Celleti's fairyland.
The compositions are very melodical, very lyrical.
Noteworthy is track 5, 'Tra Una Stella E L'altra' that features Maurizio Mansueti on theremin. Excellent.

"Crazy Girl Blue" is a narrative and entertaining album.
I found it quite restful.
Nice. Very nice.
Out on the Transparency label.

TIM KEIPER

Tip Keiper appeared on dutch tv on 2011/11/20 as part of Cyro Baptista's Banquet Of The Spirits band.
The band performed two compositions on "Vrije Geluiden".

Tim Keiper appeared in a Captain Beefheart t-shirt.

THE AKA PYGMIES - NZOMBA

Saxophonist Fabrizio Cassol, bassist Michel Hatzigeorgiou, and drummer Stéphane Galland are the founding members of Aka Moon, a Belgian avant-garde jazz band. All three were already active musicians playing in various groups including the Nasa Na Band (with guitarist Pierre Van Dormael), but came together to record as Aka Moon after spending some time in the Central African Republic studying the musical habits of the native Aka pygmies tribe.
In 1992, they released their first album, inspired by the methodology that the pygmies used in creating their music. It was the first release on the late Carbon 7 label.

The second Carbon 7 release, was a collection of recordings of the Aka Pygmies that had inspired Fabrizio Cassol, Michel Hatzigeorgiou and Stéphane Galland to record as Aka Moon.
These recordings were made by Fabrizio Cassol during their visit to the Central African Republic.
Consider the first Aka Moon album and this Aka Pygmies album a twin release.

AKA MOON - LIVE AT VOORUIT

'De Vooruit' is one of the famous concert halls in Belgium. It's located in Ghent.
Years ago, one could find the finest record store, Music Man, just across the street. Music Man has long been gone, but 'De Vooruit' is still there...

Aka Moon's "Live At Vooruit" captured the band in concert at 'De Vooruit'. This is one of Aka Moon's finest albums. If you come across it, you shouldn't hesitate.

DE SINGER * RIJKEVORSEL * BELGIUM

Did you know that the small village of Rijkevorsel (Belgium) has its own Zappa fanclub? It may not be the biggest Zappa fanclub around, but both of its members are friends of mine, so it's a pretty neat group.

And there's more to Rijkevorsel. It's also the home of one of the finest jazz clubs: 'De Singer'. Coming up soon at De Singer is Endangered Blood, a quartet from NY that includes drummer Jim Black, bass player Trevor Dunn, and reed players Chris Speed and Oscar Noriega.

Contemporary jazz.

AKA MOON WITH ICTUS - INVISIBLE MOTHER

November 1998, belgian avant-garde jazz band Aka Moon went into the studio with the Ictus Ensemble, famous for their performances of contemporary classical music. They recorded a number of pieces that were written by Fabrizio Cassol and combined traditional classical music with improvised music.
The result got released in 1999, and is fascinating.

VARIOUS ARTISTS - THE NEW UNIVERSE

November 20th and 21st, 2010, the city of Raleigh (in North Carolina, USA) hosted the New Universe Music Festival. A treat, as participants included Alex Machacek, Jimmy Herring and John McLaughlin, to name just three.
Highlights of the festival were released on this impressive 2CD set. I'm not the biggest fan of compilations / various artist albums, but for "The New Universe" I'll gladly make an exception.

GARY LUCAS - THE ORDEAL OF CIVILITY

More data for the United Mutations Archives.
Last May, Gary Lucas, the man of 1001 projects, released another album of his fabulous Gods and Monsters band. I know. I probably say this too often. But this is another fine album. If you're familiar with Gary's work, you know that you'll need to hear this.

"The Ordeal Of Civility" is out on the Knitting Factory label.

The below vid gives a little preview.

JONATHAN DAVIS AND THE SFA - ALONE I PLAY

More data are being pasted into the United Mutations Archives.
Lead singer and frontman of metalband Korn, Jonathan Davis' solo project is entitled Jonathan Davis and the Simply Fucking Amazings. To date, the band has released two albums: "Alone I Play" in 2007, and "Alone I Play / Live At The Union Chapel" in 2011.
The SFA band features Lakshmirnarayana Shankar, the violinist who performed and recorded with John McLauglin in the early seventies, and who recorded his first solo album on Frank Zappa's record label.
For my taste, this Jonathan Davis album is OK, but I would have liked to hear a bit more of Shankar (or Shenkar as he calls himself nowadays).

Here's a bit of Lakshmirnarayana Shankar from 1985 !!

UK REUNION IN 2012

It looks like former Zappa bandmembers Eddie Jobson and Terry Bozzio will reunite with John Wetton for a UK tour.

FBPO: What lies ahead for your career? What else can your fans look forward to seeing and hearing from John Wetton in the future?

John Wetton: I have a busy touring year in 2012, as a solo artist, with UK (Eddie Jobson and Terry Bozzio) and with Asia. It is Asia's 30th anniversary, so lots of good things will be happening. I will also be working with Steve Hackett, but my first date as John Wetton will be in the Midlands of England in January 2012. After that, I'm off to Tokyo and Osaka.

KIRA SMALL & BRYAN BELLER - LIVE AT THE WHITE HOUSE

"Live At The White House" caught Kira Small and (husband) Bryan Beller on tour in 2010, live at the 'Timucua White House' in Orlando, Florida.
I'm listenening to the album for the first time as I'm typing this. Haven't even listened to the entire record yet, as I'm only half way, but I can already tell you that it's worth a listen.
Kira is a great songwriter. She has a beautiful, soulful voice (and when I say 'soulful' I really mean 'soulful') and plays some great keyboards. Bryan, as you should know, is a fabulous bass player. He adds some great music and plays some excellent fuzz bass solos (and John Patitucci 's 'Backwoods' for solo bass guitar !!).
Together, Kira Small and Bryan Beller make up a great duo. They have fun and play some great music.

Fans of funky R&B and soul music should really check it out.

SLIVOVITZ - BANI AHEAD

Dear friends and relatives, the new Slivovitz album has arrived !
With "Bani Ahead", Slivovitz has released their third album. Their second on the MoonJune Records label.

Mixing angular, polyrhythmic progressive-rock with balkan influenced melodies and jazz solos, Slivovitz has developed a typical and recognisable style. Add to this the beautiful instrumentation (guitar, bass, drums, trumpet, sax, violin and harmonica) and you might get an idea of what to expect from this italian septet.

'Egiziaca', the opening track, immediately sets the tone. This is fun. The song rocks and includes a fabulous harmonica solo. Wow.
'Cleopatra Through' is another composition by sax guitar player Pietro Santangelo. The trumpet and the saxophone play the melody line and violinist Riccardo Villari takes the solo. Great.
The third track, 'Fat', is composed by bass guitar player Domenico Angarano and it's my favourite track. It combines a beautiful lyrical melody with fun solos by guitarist Marcello Giannini and harmonica player Derek Di Peri.
'Vascello' was penned by Marcello Giannini and takes a more jazz direction. Quirky stuff. I love it.
The album continues with '02-09' (Giannini). The tracks starts rather slow and quiet, but quickly turns into the most energetic composition of the album. And it's Pietro Santangelo (on sax) and Ciro Riccardi (on trumpet) who play the solos.
'Opus Focus' (Santangelo) actually is the shortest track on the album. It's a short, sweet and calm, almost solo, saxophone piece.
Next up is the title piece 'Bani Ahead' (Santangelo). This time, the focus lies on the Balkan influences.
And the disc ends with Marcello Giannini's 'Pocho'. Again, a song that combines polyrhythms, a beautiful melody and an impressive solo.

"Bani Ahead" will invite you to multiple listening sessions. I have listened to the album at least five times since last week, and it keeps putting a smile on my face.
Fans of angular, zappa-esque progressive or jazz-rock music will not be disappointed.

And be sure to read the interview with Pietro Santangelo

And I am happy to tell you that the next edition of Strip Turnhout will feature “Freak Out In Turnhout”, an expo by the C.I.A., a french group of comic book artists.
The C.I.A. (Confrérie Intergalactique des Arts) will present comics by artists from all around the globe that have been inspired by (the music of) the late Frank Zappa.
And to make it even more interesting, composer & trumpet player Bart Maris (X-Legged Sally, Think Of One, Flat Earth Society) has agreed to perform at the expo on Saturday afternoon (at 16.00 h).

PER TJERNBERG - MUSIC IS MY SALVATION

Per Tjernberg is a swedish percussionist and composer. His latest album, "Music Is My Salvation", is a brand-new release on the Country & Eastern label.
"Music Is My Salvation" is a treat for the ears and mind. Elements of contemporary classical music, world music and jazz are blended into one big musical journey.

The first two tracks on the album make up 'The Pythagoras Suite'. Part one, entitled 'The Secret Society Of Sounds', has the perfect title. It's a beautiful 10-minute piece in which a percussive soundscape slowly turns into a conversation between the brass instruments. The second part, 'The Believers', is far more jazzy and it will turn many Zappa-fan's head. The choice of instruments is great and I love the sound of the xylophone.
Track three, 'Vertical Horizons', continues in the same vain: jazzy with lots of vibraphone & marimba. This is good...

The album continues with 'The Gardens Of Obatalá', a piece with an eastern influenced intro that morphs into a great, catchy jazzy, funky tune.
The next track, 'Portrait Of Malin', is one of my favourite pieces on this disc and not only because of the superb harmonica solo by Mats Öberg. It has a beautiful, bluesy melody and some fine improvisations.
The disc continues with 'Kjell Westling / Miniature' and with 'Kalimba Interlude', the latter being shortest composition on the album. It's a solo piece by Per Tjernberg, performed on an african thumb piano.
The disc ends with 'Rejoice Be Thankful Rejoice Make A Joyous Noise', a soulful and happy piece. The perfect ending of a great album.

"Music Is My Salvation" is a beautiful album. It's quiet, yet jazzy. It's soothing, yet cheerful. I like it a lot.

In his liner notes, Per Tjernberg says:
"Or, as Frank Zappa simply put it: "Music is the best".
That doesn't mean that nothing else matters, but that it is the realization of what we can only dream of.."

I can't agree more.

Highly recommended.
