THE HATERS - FURTHER

The Transparency label has never been afraid of taking risks.
Here's another album that will probably only appeal to a very small audience.

Founded by SURVIVAL RESEARCH LAB's GX JUPITTER=LARSEN, THE HATERS were formed in 1979 and are known as America's premier noise act. They won Best Electronic Experimental Artist in the 2005 LA Weekly music awards. These are brand new studio recordings, two "extra noisy" tracks totaling over an hour. "A lot of what people think is Noise is not. The only true Noise bands I can think of are TNB and The Haters and stuff like that because it has no human element to it whatsoever."-John Olsen of Wolf Eyes (Transparency).

MIKE KENEALLY & MARCO MINNEMANN - EVIDENCE OF HUMANITY

"Evidence Of Humanity" has a extraordinary and exceptional concept. Percussionist and composer Marco Minnemann provided the same album-length drum improvisation to different artists and invited them to compose music for it.
Among the participating artists one finds Trey Gunn and Alex Machacek just to name two. And now Mike Keneally has been added to the list as well.

Mike Keneally's music has always been on the on the edge. And with every new album, he went a bit further, making the new album sounding even more MK then the previous one.

With "Evidence Of Humanity", Mike Keneally leads you even further away from the safe, familiar and comforting path.

This is music that you will want to hear again and again.
But remember, this is not the album that you should try when you've never heard Mike Keneally's music before.

This is good. It's great. It's fabulous. It's just not easy.
There's lots of Zappa-esque rhythms and lines in there as well. Check out 'Tooth And Cold Stone Pew' if you can.

Highly recommended !!

DJ GRAZZHOPPA'S DJ BIGBAND + AKA MOON - S/T

Here's the new AKA MOON album!!

Imagine this: 12 DJs and their turntables that are being directed as a bigband. Add to this, top jazz improvisers Aka Moon, plus the soulful voice of Monique Harcum, and you get "DJ Grazzhoppa's BigBand with Aka Moon".

This project did a couple of concerts, one of which was at Jazz Middelheim.

Pretty incredible. You have to hear it to believe it...

FABRIZZIO CASSOL - VSPRS

When Fabrizio Cassol was asked by choreographer Alain Platel to write music inspered by Monteverdi's "Vespri della Beata Vergine" for a dance production, he wrote beautiful baroque music with jazz, oriental and arabian influences.

The result was called "Vsprs" and was used for the performance by the Les Ballets C. de le B. dance group.

For the live performance of the music, Fabrizio joined Aka Moon with a baroque ensemble, a gypsy duo and some classical singers.

The album presents a studio recording of the music.
Astonishing.

Earlier today, I added the data for another Zappa-linked album to the United Mutations Archives.
I have never actually heard the album, so I can't tell you what it's like, but it does feature a nice bunch of Zappa alumni: Terry Bozzio, Patrick O'Hearn, Ed Mann, Vinnie Colaiuta, and not in the least Peter Wolf all participated.

Released in 1978 on LP and on K7.
Hasn't been released on CD (yet).

We are glad to introduce you Radio Chopstick , a new non-profit online music archive, which presents a collection of interesting jazz and improvised recordings by mostly Belgian, but also Italian, Japanese, Indian & Portugese musicians. To listen click http://www.chopstick.be/?page_id=88 or surf to www.chopstick.be !

Our goal is to build up this archive step by step with recordings that are not reaching audiences by conventional cd production due to it's uncommercial character or expensive production process.

SUN RA AND THE MEANING OF BEING

Here's an excellent article that was posted on the Saturn Newsgroup by dantrem.

Sun Ra and the Meaning of Being
March 26th, 2008 by David Kronemyer

African-American spirituality has been expressed in a profound musical tradition dating back to the first days of slavery in the United States. One of the genre’s consistent lyrical themes is the temporality of life, its transience and impermanence, the problem of evil, and the promise of a better world to come. Jimi Hendrix explored these topics when he sang of “Castles made of sand, that melt into the sea, eventually” and “I’ll meet you in the next world, don’t be late.” Its primary exponent in recent years, however, was the great Sun Ra. He understood this dynamic better than anyone. Not only that, he expressed it in beautiful poetry and music infused with a mystical Egyptians-in-space cosmology.

Sun Ra’s concerns go beyond a possible after-life or a world that is an alternative to this one. More fundamentally, he was concerned with the meaning of being in this world. Although he may have aspired to it, Sun Ra did not believe he actually came from another planet. Rather, this aspect of his metaphysics is a proxy for the sense of estrangement he experienced in this one. As an intergalactic wanderer, he had no home; he was unheimlichkeit (homeless, or living outside of one’s own country). Space is not some other “place” but a metaphor for the milieu in which he found himself and the differentiation and alienation he encountered as he navigated its contours.

Sun Ra had experienced all there was to experience and seen all there was to see. As an itinerant black musician in the 1950s – 1980s, playing odd music with a large entourage, he experienced blatant racial discrimination as well as crushing financial impoverishment. Notwithstanding, Sun Ra extended his hand to the listener as a guide, like Dante’s through the Inferno. He was indifferent to the constraints of this world and his temporal embodiment in it, even as he reveled in them as the fundamental premise of being.

Illustrative is an untitled Declamation that appears at 8:25 on Live at the Horseshoe Tavern (recorded March 13, 1978, disc III), an amazing CD available through Transparency Records, which has undertaken to release many archival Sun Ra recordings. Other partial versions appear elsewhere, but this the most complete, and the most compelling. I exercised some modest editorial license, particularly towards the end. I combined various versions and rearranged the order of the lines. I also eliminated some repetition, which is wholly appropriate in the context of the work as performed, but seemed redundant in a transcription. Without question the best part is Sun Ra’s knowing, ironic laugh after he says, “This is not life!”

I have many names –
Names of mystery, names of splendor, and names of shame.
You sleep in the deep dark Babylonian night,
Dreaming, thinking this illusion that you call life is real.
It’s just an illusion, an infinite conclusion.
This is not life!
They think this is life, they think this is real.
How could you dare to say this world of misery is the ultimate of being?
How can you dare to call this thing of existence, life?
This is not life – this is death disguised as life.
It is not real.
This misery, this world of pain and distraction, is not life.
I know what life is – life is not full of tears – Life knows no death.
How can it be life, if there is truth?
No, this is not life. You are only asleep and dreaming.
Just dreaming of sleep, in the deep dark Babylonian night.
You are dreaming that you are doing all the things you did, before you die.
You will die dreaming.
Cry, cry for the people of earth, cry to heaven.
Maybe heaven will hear, and the people no longer will have to die.
Why should you have to die? Is there any reason why? What does it prove?
Look for something else. Bypass dying, and by bypass death.
Look for being – all that you can be – and continue to be, just as millions of beings.
Being – immortal, eternal being. It’s not life, it’s not death.
Let us do it together, across the sea of immortality, beyond the furthest stars.
Let us journey together across the sea of immortality.
Let us go somewhere there, many light years in space,
Where human beings have never been,
That human eyes have never seen,
And human feet have never trod.
I know that I’m a member of an angel race,
My home is somewhere there out in outer space.
I could have enjoyed myself on this planet, if the people had been alive,
But this world is not my home.
The satellites are spinning, the world is just awakening.
Where happiness is pending, a better day is breaking.
The galaxy’s awaiting, for planet earth’s awakening.
What do you do when you know that you know, that you know that you’re wrong?
You’ve got to face the music, you’ve got to listen to the cosmos song.
We sing this song to a great tomorrow,
We sing this song to abolish sorrow.
Come on, and take a journey.
Take my hand, I’m a stranger from paradise.
In some far place, many light years in space,
I’ll build a world of abstract dreams,
I’ll wait for you, somewhere there, many light years away,
Traveling a strange celestial road.

MIKE KENEALLY NEWSFLASH

Mike Keneally says:

Baked Potato Live DVD Concert Shoot Wednesday!

Quick one, mainly for West Coast residents:

First off, I wanted to again encourage anyone who can make it to the Baked Potato in LA this Wednesday (September 15) to join us for the live DVD taping of the Keneally Band/Beller Band performance - this is the same group of players (Keneally, Beller, Musallam, Peters, Travers) who did the "They're Both The Same Band" East Coast tour in May. This will be our last show for a good long while since I'll be out with Satriani solidly from October through January. Bring friends! The set of Beller tunes starts at 9:00 pm; Keneally set will probably start around 10:00 or so. Turns out we're doing 18 of my tunes, not 16 like I said last week. I had a couple of last minute additions I really want to play.

Also - San Diego residents - I got a call from Kofi Baker a couple of days ago, asking if I could help out: OHM had a headlining spot at Lestat's on September 25 as part of the Adams Ave. Street Fair, but unfortunately Chris Poland can't make the gig, so they asked if I could fill in and make it a Tribute to Cream gig. I said sure! So, we're doing an hour-long show of Cream tunes at Lestat's on Adams Ave. in San Diego, at 8:00 on Saturday, September 25.

And if all goes according to plan, Evidence of Humanity will be ready to pick up from the replicator tomorrow, and I'll be selling them at the show at the Baked Potato on Wednesday, and we'll start shipping the pre-orders this week.

That's it! Thanks everyone!

Mike

PALINCKX - TIGHT SPOTS

The last time that I saw Palinckx in concert was in April 2006. The concert was entitled "Fab 8 plays #9", and it was as experimental as the title suggested. I remember my friend (Ive H.) and me bringing some people along, having convinced them that it would be something like a Beatles quiz.
Actually, it was something like a Beatles quiz, just not the quiz that they had expected...
Fun.

And here's "Tight Spots". Also released in 2006 and collecting recordings from 2004 to 2006.
It's not just the latest, but it's also the last Palinckx record.

Less experimental than some of the previous Palinckx releases, "Tight Spots" still has the recognisable Palinckx sound. The album is obviously influenced by 70's psychedelic, progrock and experimental music. Think Beefheart and Pere Ubu, or the more contemporary dEUS or Zita Swoon. Jacq Palinckx' guitar work is great. Bert Palinckx & Alan Purves keep this train rolling, DJ DNA adds moog and more, and Han Buhrs lifts it to the next level.

Let's be blunt about this: "Tight Spots" is a fabulous recording.
Tip to the hat !
& thank you very much.

Essential listening.

THE BROWNIES - DEMO

The Brownies is Marco C. de Bruin's band. The 10-piece ensemble mixes jazz and pop into groovy, zappa-esque tunes.

If I'm not mistaken, I mentioned The Brownies a couple of months ago, when I had heard some of their material through their website. I recall being quite impressed.
So when I got the demo about a week ago, I was able to play the music through the stereo.

Wowie zowie !! This is good.
Check them out.
The demo is about 15 minutes and can be ordered through the band's website:

SUN RA ARKESTRA IN CONCERT TODAY - 2010 09 12

from the Saturn newsgroup:

The Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen will appear as part of the Bang on a Can Marathon at World Cafe Live, 3025 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA on Sunday, September 12, 2010. This event is part of the 2010 Philadelphia Live Arts Festival and is the first time that the Bang on a Can Marathon has arrived in Philadelphia.

The Bang on a Can format for this Philadelphia event runs from 2:00 pm to midnight including 10 hours of live performances from 17 different bands, somewhat tamer than their recent 27 hour Bang on a Can Marathon in New York City. The Sun Ra Arkestra under the direction of Marshall Allen are scheduled to perform during the 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm timeslot in the format that has multiple bands performing simultaneously on
different floors at the World Cafe Live.

The Bang on a Can Marathon includes music from experimental noise to free jazz and various hybrids in between. This edition focuses on local and native Philadelphia talent including Keepers of the Chaos (Jamaalandeen Tacuma & Calvin Weston), Normal Love, Uri Caine Trio, and of course the Sun Ra Arkestra. From outside of Philadelphia comes bands like Asphalt Orchestra (playing pieces by Mingus & Zappa), So Percussion, and the Bang on a Can All Stars, along with many others.

THE OTHER WORLDS OF SUN RA ON ARCHIVE DOT COM

from the SATURN newsgroup
Hi Folks,
Here for your listening pleasure is our new Sun Ra radio documentary feature
http://www.archive.org/details/TheOtherWorldsOfSunRa
Enjoy!
John

In the history of post-war jazz in the US, perhaps the strangest and most mysterious figure is Sun Ra. An outstanding pianist, composer, arranger and big band leader, he was also a science fiction philosopher, Afro Futurist poet and self-declared citizen of Saturn.

Sun Ra's life project mixed a fascination with outer space with his African roots and wildly expressive music, which continues to delight and inspire audiences almost two decades after he left the planet.

The Other Worlds of Sun Ra features writer and activist Amiri Baraka, who collaborated with Ra in the New York underground of the 1960s. Sun Ra's archivist and one-time drummer, Michael D. Anderson, gives an insider's perspective of playing with Ra and his Arkestra. There are readings from Sun Ra's pamphlets and poems as well as the voice of the man himself. And of
course -- plenty of Sun Ra's weird, beautiful and other-worldly music.

BEN WATSON'S POETRY ON ZAPPATEERS

Friday the 13th of August, Ben Watson hosted a Quiz at Zappanale.
A right answer got you a token.

The winners had to turn up on Sunday to collect their prizes.

Ob's recording of the prize-giving event on Sunday is being seeded at Zappateers.
http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=19778

All the winners had to read some of Ben's unique poetry before they could claim their prizes. So as well as introductions, you get to hear a few zappateers reading some Watsonian Poetry.
Fun.

SUN RA ON RE:SOUNDS RADIO SHOW

Episode 122 of the "Re:Sounds" radio show focused on Nick Drake and on Sun Ra:

This hour: two amazing musicians explored through the portal of two amazing documentaries.

Three Records from Sundown
by Charles Maynes (Podstantsiya, FNR, 2009)
British singer/songwriter Nick Drake was just 26 when he died from an overdose of anti-depressants. He'd recorded three albums over the course of his lifetime, none of which sold very well, and he died in relative obscurity. But fast forward forty years and Nick Drake has been resurrected. He's now largely thought of as one of the most influential artists of his time and he's sold far more records than he ever did when he was living.

The Other Worlds of Sun Ra
by Brent Clough and John Jacobs (The Night Air, ABC, 2009)
The name Sun Ra is synonymous with far out philosophies, experimental music, great talent, and cosmic costumes. From big band and bee bop to avant garde and disco (with stops everywhere in between) Sun Ra was a musician of great breadth as well as a bandleader, keyboardist, visionary, philosopher, and entertainer extraordinaire.

PRINCE - INDIGO NIGHTS

A couple of years ago, Prince released the "21 Nights" photobook, about his 2007 London concert series. With the book, comes a bonus CD. It's a live album, compromising songs that were performed at the various afterpartys at the IndigO2 night club.

If you shop around a bit, you can get this big, hardcover book, with the bonus CD, for a very interesting price. I got mine a couple of weeks ago.
Excellent.

-- thanks to Harald for pointing this one out to me
